What Is The Process Of A Divorce in Oklahoma

When you are seeking a divorce the first thing you need to do is to sit down with a Tulsa divorce attorney to determine exactly what the best path for divorce will be for you. There are several different types of divorces ( no-fault divorce, non-contested divorce, contested divorce). The first two types of divorce are fairly easy and straightforward. A contested divorce can get complicated and end up having many different endings.

After you talk to your attorney you will need to file for divorce in your local Court House. In Oklahoma, this is called filing for a "dissolution of marriage." Your spouse will then have to respond to this dissolution of marriage. They will be given up to a month to respond to this. If they do not respond after a month then the proceedings will go forward without them. Depending on what type of divorce it is things will either move fast or really slow.

What would happen in a contested divorce is the attorneys of both spouses would meet and try to sort as many issues as they could. The issues that could not be worked out between the attorneys would have to be taken before a judge. Then the judge would decide, but it does not stop there. The other side would have a chance to appeal the judge's ruling. You see how this could turn into a lengthy process.

We advise you seek a divorce attorney council no matter what type of divorce you are seeking. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Hanson & Hanson Law Firm.
